A Critique of Arguments Against Taking Future Generations Into Account In doing the readings for this week, I noticed that there were few arguments in favor of ignoring concern for future generations. A large percentage of the authors seemed to feel that it is our moral responsibility to at least take the well being of future generations into account in our decision-making (Note: these authors also provided us with powerful arguments as to why we have a moral obligation to future generations). In trying to figure out why there were so few arguments on the other side of the issue, I realized that there simply aren't many ways to argue against our moral responsibility to future peoples. I would like to briefly address the weaknesses in arguments which suggest that we should not factor the well-being of future generations into our decision-making. I would then like to address the issue of whether providing for future peoples will result in problems for the present generation. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, I will discuss a weakness which I found in all of the articles, which is: in talking so much about future concerns,it can be easy to lose track of the immediacy of environmental concerns for generations who are already alive. The only real arguments which we read against concern for future peoples were found in the Heilbroner article. Heilbroner quotes two different economists, both of whom seem to raise the same question: why should I care how long the human species lives? One of the economists states that we cant necessarily say that generations who are yet unborn are any better off if they are born than if they are not (quoted in Pojman 277). The... ..., I critiqued the two economists quoted in Heilborns article. To return to them for a minute, both men seemed to miss the point which I just mentioned -- the environmental crisis is not simply a matter of whether or not humans survive. Instead, it is a matter of how we are able to live over the next couple of centuries (and possibly beyond). Will the world continue to be plagued by rising cancer rates? Will the air be adequate to breathe without developing illness or asthma? Will our children have forests to play in? The answer to these questions lies clearly in our hands and in our willingness to take responsibility for the consequences of our actions. Regardless of whether the consequences will occur in twenty minutes, three days or a year, we must be willing to face up to reality instead of always turning to look the other way.

With the use of this information, it is simple to see how Shakespeare manages to create stories with such everlasting appeal. In Hamlet, Act 1, Scene 1 proves to be a vital element to understanding the play. One important task it serves is to determine the mood of the play. From the beginning of the scene, the reader is aware of the atmosphere of mistrust and uncertainty lingering in the air. When the reader is first introduced to the main characters outside the castle, they are suspiciously asking each other to identify themselves. Everyone seems to be on edge from the start, as if anticipating something. Another factor that reveals a mood of wariness and caution is how the night is dark, the air is chilling, and the characters speak of "the bitter cold," (p. 9, ln.8). This evokes a mood of foreboding and mystery. At one point, Fransisco ends his watch thankfully because, "he is sick at heart," (p.9, Ln. 10). Shortly after the atmosphere is created, the reader is introduced to the idea of a ghost, which sets a mood of dread and eerieness. The men speak of the ghost with great fear, and are very apprehensive to witness it again. Also introduced is the impression of death and the supernatural. Although it is assumed that the ghost is that of the late king, it is also presented that perhaps it is a demon, posing as the king. And if it is a ghost, why has it returned? The appearance of a wordless ghost is an important dramatic device that Shakespeare uses to rivet attention to the action, as well as to set the tone of the story. With use of such elements, Shakespeare effectively paints a distinct mood for the remainder of the play. Determination of Brand Personality Dimensions Essay

Abstract This research was conducted to (i) identify brand personality dimensions of a laptop computer amongst computer science students; (ii) examine significant differences in the brand personality dimensions of the laptop according to the students’ background of gender, brand owned, year of study and programs; and (iii) examine the relationship between perceived brand personality of the laptop and its quality rating. The measurement of brand personality was based on the Aaker’s Brand Personality Scale. A total of 268 questionnaires were gathered from computer science students in a Malaysian public university using Stratified Random Sampling method. Confirmatory factor analysis was employed to validate the measurement. The findings revealed that sincerity was ‘the human characteristic’ that users of the laptop associated themselves with the brand. Ruggedness was a brand personality that nonusers associated themselves with the laptop. Significant means differences were observed in the brand personality dimensions of the laptop according to the students’ gender, present year of study and academic program. For users of the laptop, sincerity and modern of the brand personality dimensions were positively correlated with the brand quality rating. For non-users, a positive correlation existed between ruggedness, diligent and modern of the brand personality with the brand quality rating. Several implications were drawn based on the results of the research to enhance branding strategies of the laptop and for future researches.
